Bergamot without bergapten (FCF) – Full description & information

Origin & tradition. Bergamot, a cult citrus essence used in colognes and citrus fragrances, comes mainly from Calabria (Italy). The FCF (bergapten-free) version retains the citrus-floral freshness while reducing the phototoxicity associated with furocoumarins, making it more versatile in certain formulas.

Plant & raw material. Citrus bergamia (Rutaceae). The zest is rich in aromatic vesicles; an essence is first obtained by cold expression , then rectification/fractionation is carried out to eliminate a large part of the furocoumarins (including bergapten).

Olfactory profile & creative use. Sweet, floral-tea, light lemony top note with a green nuance typical of citrus fruits. Magnificent binder: blends with flowers (neroli, lavender, geranium), citrus fruits (lemon, orange), light woods (cedar) and fine herbs (petitgrain, rosemary verbenone). The FCF version avoids darkening “sun care”/“daytime” bases when phototoxic limits are restrictive.

Agreements & examples (to be tested and validated)

100g candle — fragrance load 2–5%: Bergamot FCF 1.0–2.0g + Neroli 0.2–0.4g + Cedar 0.2–0.4g (cure ≥ 48h).
Spray 100 ml — Total EO 0.8–1.5%: Bergamot FCF 0.5–0.9% + Lavender 0.2–0.4% + Petitgrain 0.1–0.3% (maturation 24–48 h).
Soap 1 kg — HE 0.5–1.0%: Bergamot FCF 0.3–0.6% + Geranium 0.1–0.2% + Lemon dist. 0.1–0.2%.

Formulation tips

The FCF version limits the phototoxic risk but does not automatically cancel it for all matrices: check IFRA/allergen compliance according to the category and exposure (leave-on vs rinse-off, area exposed to the sun, SPF, etc.).

Precautions & Compliance

Product reserved for professionals. Not ingestible. Do not apply neat. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Phototoxicity significantly reduced vs. standard essence, but strictly follow applicable standards. Not recommended for pregnancy/breastfeeding. Keep out of reach of children/animals. Store away from heat and light, bottle tightly closed.
