Bois de Hô – Full description & information

Origin & tradition. Derived from the Asian camphor tree ( Cinnamomum camphora , Lauraceae), the “Ho” chemotype corresponds to qualities naturally rich in linalool (>90% depending on the batch). Cultivated in particular in China, “Bois de Ho” is a modern reference for obtaining a “clean” floral-pink facet — often used as a technical alternative to Amazonian rosewood.

Botanical description & material. Evergreen tree, aromatic leathery leaves; the essential oil is distilled from the wood/twigs (there are also “leaf” qualities). Profiles vary depending on the organ (wood vs. leaf) and origin: always dominated by linalool, with possible traces of linalool oxides.

Olfactory profile & construction. Floral-rosy top-heart, sweet, crystalline, with a subtle freshness and fine woody facets. Excellent binder for citrus (bergamot, orange), flowers (rose, geranium, lavender, ylang) and light woods (cedar). Brings “cleanliness” and polish to the accords.

Agreements & examples (to be tested and validated)

100g candle — fragrance load 2–5%: Bois de Hô 0.3–0.8g + Bergamot 0.6–1.0g + Geranium 0.2–0.4g (cure ≥ 48h).
Spray 100 ml — EO 0.8–1.2%: Bois de Hô 0.15–0.35% + Neroli 0.05–0.10% + Orange dist. 0.30–0.60% (maturation 24–48 h).

Formulation tips

Start with a low dose (strong “smoothing” power). Combine with bergamot/petitgrain for a clean freshness, or with flowers (rose/geranium/ylang) for a velvety heart. Manage the oxidation of linalool (antioxidant, suitable packaging) and check color/odor stability according to the medium (wax, soap, alcohol, water/alcohol).
