Siam Wood – Full Description & Information

Origin & tradition. Native to Vietnam, Southern China and Laos, “Bois de Siam” (Pemou, Po Mu, Fujian Cypress) is appreciated in artisanal and fine perfumery for its woody-balsamic warmth, used as a structuring and softening base.

Botanical description & raw material. Fokienia hodginsii is a large coniferous tree of subtropical rainforests. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of wood (chips/bark/branches). Like many wood oils, it is rich in sesquiterpenes/sesquiterpene alcohols (typically "base" profile).

Olfactory profile & construction. Creamy woody attack, balsamic opopanax/cedar heart, soft amber nuances, very elegant clean finish. Excellent for linking distilled citrus (bergamot, orange), florals (geranium, lavender, ylang) and balsams (benzoin). Very useful for "polishing" a woody accord and extending its length.

Soap 1 kg — HE 0.4–0.8%: Siamese wood 0.15–0.30% + Lavender 0.20–0.40% + Lemon dist. 0.10–0.20%.

Formulation tips

Dose gradually (very enveloping). Combine with distilled citrus to lighten, or with balms/woods to strengthen the base. Check the olfactory adhesion according to the support (wax, soap, alcohol/water-alcohol) and the color stability.
