Australian Sandalwood – Full Description & Information

Origin & Tradition. Australian sandalwood is endemic to the semi-arid regions of Western Australia. Its wood oil, prized in fine and home fragrances, serves as a warm, enveloping, and fixative base note . It is often chosen as a traceable alternative to Indian sandalwood for woody/amber/oriental creations.

Botanical description & material. Santalum spicatum (Santalaceae) is a small hemiparasitic tree. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the wood (chips/sections). Authentic batches are dominated by santalols (α/β), supplemented with (Z)-nuciferol and farnesol, giving the characteristic creamy sweetness.

Olfactory profile & construction. Sweet top note, woody-creamy heart, warm/amber base with great staying power. Excellent hinge between distilled citrus fruits (bergamot, orange), flowers (rose, jasmine, ylang) and resins (benzoin, opopanax). Brings body , roundness and staying power to the accords.
