Pacific Sandalwood (wood) – Full Description & Information

Origin & Tradition. Endemic to the Pacific (New Caledonia and neighboring archipelagos), this sandalwood is sought after for its very elegant woody-creamy profile, often chosen as a traceable alternative to Indian sandalwood while retaining a refined amber warmth.

Botanical description & raw material. Santalum austrocaledonicum (Santalaceae) is a small hemiparasitic tree. The essential oil in this sheet comes from the heartwood , obtained by steam distillation . Authentic batches have a dominant sesquiterpene alcohols (e.g. santalols, bergamotol) which provide the creamy softness and hold.

Olfactory profile & construction. Sweet top, woody-lactonic heart, very persistent warm/amber base. Excellent fixative/polisher : binds distilled citrus (bergamot, orange), flowers (rose, jasmine, ylang) and balms/resins (benzoin, opopanax).
