Alpine Genepi ( Artemisia mutellina ), also known as white genepi, is one of the most sought-after species for its delicate fragrance and traditional uses in mountain herbalism. Harvested between 2,000 and 3,200 meters above sea level, it is used with caution in recipes for liqueurs, infusions, and Alpine folk remedies.

Less powerful but more floral than other genepi varieties, Artemisia mutellina is distinguished by its refined aroma, highly valued in traditional preparations. Its rarity in the wild now requires controlled cultivation and responsible harvesting for its preservation.

Main virtues

Traditionally used to promote light digestion, and appreciated as a fragrant infusion or as a base for typical Alpine liqueurs.

Main constituents

Essential oils (camphor, cineole), sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids.

Use and dosage

  • Infusion: 1 g for 250 ml of simmering water, infuse for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Alcoholic macerate: 30 to 50 g per liter of 40° alcohol for a sweet and fragrant liqueur (maceration of approximately 40 days).
  • Culinary use: flavoring of mountain desserts and traditional drinks.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Use in moderation (natural presence of thujone).
  • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and young children.
  • Respect the recommended doses, occasional festive use preferred.

History and origin

Mentioned in Alpine traditions since the Middle Ages, white Génépi is the subject of artisanal know-how passed down from generation to generation, particularly in the valleys of Savoie and Valle d'Aosta. Its cultivation is now regulated to preserve its future and its fragile environment.
