Main virtues

Natural softener for respiratory mucous membranes, digestive soothing, recommended for dry coughs, laryngitis or mild gastric disorders.

Main constituents

Mucilages, lichen acids (usnic, protolichesterinic), starch, vitamin C, bitters.

Traditional use and dosage

  • Capsules: 300 to 500 mg per unit. Up to 3 doses per day for short courses.
  • Express infusion: 1/2 teaspoon of powder in 200 ml of hot water. Mix well, let stand for 5 minutes before drinking (bitter!).
  • Homemade syrups or paste: Mixed with honey, vegetable glycerin or a mild hydrosol to prepare a homemade fabric softener.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Can be very bitter: mix with honey or licorice according to tolerance.
  • Not recommended for children < 6 years old without medical advice.
  • Do not exceed the recommended doses for long periods.

History and use

Used since the Middle Ages in Iceland and Northern Europe, Iceland moss has survived the centuries for its protective effects on the bronchi and stomach. Its powder form is particularly suited to modern uses without loss of active ingredients.
