Main virtues

Traditional use and dosage

  • Infusion: 1 tablespoon of chopped leaves for 250 ml of simmering water. Infuse for 8 to 10 minutes. 1 to 3 cups per day.
  • Blends: Combine with fennel, anise, rosemary or thyme for a digestive-enhancing herbal tea.
  • Culinary use: Add to soups, broths, salads or stuffings for a fragrant and invigorating touch.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Not recommended for pregnant women (stimulating effects on the uterus).
  • Do not use in case of renal failure or acute inflammation of the urinary tract.
  • May be photosensitizing at high doses (presence of furocoumarins).

History and use

Already mentioned by Greek physicians and used in medieval monasteries, lovage was known to "warm the humours," stimulate the appetite, and promote purification. A hardy plant, it remains popular in digestive herbal medicine and Alpine cuisine.
