Use and dosage

  • Infusion: 1 teaspoon of lightly crushed fruit for 200 ml of simmering water. Infuse for 10 minutes. Up to 2 times a day.
  • Culinary use: grate or grind like a classic pepper in exotic dishes, meats, broths.
  • Powder: to be dosed at a rate of 500 mg to 1 g per day depending on use (formulation in capsules or as a mixture).

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Avoid in case of gastritis or peptic ulcer.
  • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women without medical advice.
  • May irritate digestive mucous membranes in high doses.

History and traditional use

Cubeb pepper was used in Arab-Muslim medicine and medieval European pharmacopoeia to treat respiratory, urinary, and digestive disorders. It was also prized in medieval cuisine as a noble spice. Once forgotten, it is now making a comeback in natural preparations and high-quality medicinal spices.
