A tonic root of Shen and memory

Considered a heart (Shen) and lung herb, polygala is used to improve concentration, soothe sleep disturbances related to stress or mental agitation, and support mental clarity. It is also traditionally used as an expectorant for cases of stagnant mucus.

Description

Thin, threadlike or twisted roots, yellow-brown to light brown in color. Woody and slightly bitter odor. Brittle texture when dry. Raw product intended for professional processing.

  • Decoction: 3 to 6 g of root for 250 ml of water – boil for 15 min, consume up to 2 times a day under supervision.
  • Powder or capsules: dosage between 300 and 500 mg/day, reserved for professional use according to TCM protocol.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • May irritate the stomach or cause nausea in high doses.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in case of uncontrolled hypertension.

En France, les plantes médicinales sont classées par l’ANSM en deux grandes listes :

  • Liste A : plantes médicinales présumées actives, dont l’usage est autorisé uniquement sous encadrement (officines, médicaments, préparations magistrales). Certaines sont partiellement en vente libre si elles figurent parmi les 148 plantes autorisées par le décret du 1er septembre 2008.
