A gentle flower for the throat, bronchi and skin

Thanks to its rich mucilage content, hollyhock flower forms a protective layer on mucous membranes, relieving inflammation and irritation. It is traditionally used to prepare gentle pectoral infusions, eye baths, and soothing skin treatments.

Professional use and dosage

  • Chest infusion: 1 to 2 tablespoons of flowers per 250 ml of hot water. Infuse for 10 minutes. Drink 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Eye bath: filtered infusion to soothe irritated or dry eyes (for external use only).
  • Plant coloring: dried flowers are also used to lightly tint infusions or cosmetic preparations purple/pink.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • No known side effects at usual doses.
  • Not to be confused with other non-edible Malvaceae species.
  • Use under strict hygiene conditions for ocular or cutaneous use.

History and traditional use

Since the Middle Ages, hollyhock has been cultivated as much for its beauty as for its gentle medicinal properties. It was used in decoctions for dry coughs, to soothe sore throats, and to ease minor digestive problems. It is one of the traditional "pectoral flowers," along with mallow and poppy.
