Scabious is primarily used for its mild expectorant properties, soothing dry coughs, and for external use to soothe itching, small wounds, or skin impurities. It is also used in spring cleansing preparations or seasonal detoxifying cures.

Description

Aerial parts (stems, leaves, flowering tops) cut and dried. Gray-green to pale brown color, subtle herbaceous odor, slightly bitter flavor. Harvested at the beginning of flowering for a higher content of active ingredients.

  • Infusion: 2 to 3 g per cup – infuse for 8 to 10 minutes – 2 to 3 cups/day for a short course.
  • External decoction: 10 g/L – boil for 5 min – use as a compress or local bath to relieve itching or small wounds.
  • Common associations: wild pansy, burdock, white broth, marshmallow, nettle.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • No known contraindications at usual doses.
  • Plant well tolerated, including prolonged or external use.
  • Not recommended only in case of known allergy to the Caprifoliaceae family.

History and traditional use

Scabious was used in the Middle Ages to treat skin conditions formerly called "dartres" or "dry leprosy." It was also used to purify the blood in spring, relieve mild flu-like symptoms, and calm irritating coughs. It features in many cleansing blends or for skin balance among traditional herbalists.
