Alpine vulneraria is a small perennial plant belonging to the Hypericaceae family. It grows on the rocky slopes of Alpine and pre-Alpine mountain ranges, and owes its name to its traditional use in "wound plants" (vulnus in Latin). It is traditionally infused or applied topically in mountainous areas.

Vulneraria is often included in mountain blends for digestive or soothing purposes. Its profile is mild, with no known photosensitizing effects, unlike St. John's wort. It remains an iconic plant of alpine herbariums, sometimes used in local tincture, post-meal herbal tea, or traditional compresses.

Description

Whole cut plant, composed of flowering tops, oval leaves, and flexible stems. Gray-green to golden-green color. Slightly herbaceous odor, bittersweet flavor. Harvested in mountainous areas, slowly air-dried. No chemical treatment or preservatives.

History and tradition

Widely used in the Alps in the form of tincture or post-exercise infusion, vulneraria is one of the mountain medicinal plants passed down orally from generation to generation. It was traditionally harvested in late summer to make winter remedies. It is still prized today in artisanal circuits of gentle and local herbal medicine.
