Used alone or in synergy with ash, mouse-ear hawkweed, or meadowsweet, orthosiphon supports kidney and digestive functions. However, it is classified as a regulated plant in France; its use is therefore reserved for adults and limited to short, controlled periods. The ANSM recommends not exceeding 6 consecutive weeks of use without medical advice.

Description

Dried and cut leaves, gray-green to brown-green in color, discreet herbaceous odor, slightly bitter, vegetal and refreshing taste.

Main virtues

Traditional use and dosage

• Infusion: 1 tablespoon per 250 ml of simmering water. Infuse for 10 to 12 minutes. Drink 2 to 3 cups per day, for a maximum of 2 to 3 weeks.
• Decoction: 20 g/L, to be consumed as a short course, accompanied by sufficient hydration.
• Classic synergy: with cherry stem, hawkweed, blackcurrant, ash or burdock.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

• For adults only. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Contraindicated in cases of renal insufficiency or strict low-sodium diet.
• Do not exceed 6 weeks of use without medical advice.
• May interact with diuretics and other drainage treatments.

Used for centuries in Indonesia and Malaysia, orthosiphon is a mainstay of traditional infusions for urinary disorders, slow digestion, and detoxification treatments.
