Figwort is known for its "blood cleansing" effect, acting deeply on chronic skin imbalances or lymphatic congestion. It is also useful in certain mild inflammatory conditions, when used occasionally and in a controlled manner.

Description

Cut aerial part including stems, leaves and dried flower tops. Gray-green to pale brown color, slightly earthy odor, bitter taste. Harvest at the beginning of flowering.

Professional use and dosage

• Decoction: 5 to 10 g per liter – boil for 10 minutes – use as a short course of 5 to 7 days.
• Infusion: 1 to 2 g per cup – infuse for 8 to 10 minutes – 1 to 2 times per day for a short period.
• Common associations: wild pansy, burdock, nettle, fumitory, milk thistle.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

• Contraindicated in cases of heart disease or treatment with digitalis.
• Do not use if pregnant, breastfeeding or in children.
• Do not exceed 7 to 10 days of use without professional follow-up.

History and traditional use

Figwort was used in folk medicine for "scrofula," but also in spring formulas intended to "cleanse the blood." It was known to act on lymph nodes, chronic dermatological lesions (dry eczema, ringworm, psoriasis), and certain lymphatic congestions. It often appeared in monastery remedies alongside burdock or wild pansy.
