Long pepper ( Piper longum ), also known as Indian pepper, is an elongated catkin-shaped fruit that has been used since ancient times in Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine and Indian cuisine. Hotter and milder than traditional black pepper, it has a profound effect on the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems. It is notably used in the famous Trikatu and Chyawanprash formulations.

Long pepper is known to stimulate the appetite, warm the digestive system, reduce bloating, and improve the bioavailability of other active ingredients. It is also used to calm coughs, clear the airways, and act as a mild nervous system tonic.

Description

Elongated, rough fruits measuring 2 to 5 cm, dark brown to black in color, with a warm, peppery, and slightly sweet aroma. Tangy and penetrating flavor, without excessive burning.

Use and dosage

  • Infusion or decoction: 1 crushed fruit for 200 ml of water, infuse for 10-15 minutes – up to 2 times a day.
  • Ayurvedic formulation: Often used with ginger (Zingiber officinale) and black pepper in Trikatu .
  • Culinary use: grated or ground in stews, sauces, curries and broths.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Do not exceed the recommended doses: noticeable heating effect.
  • Not recommended in cases of ulcers, gastric hyperacidity or acute digestive inflammation.
  • Caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women (occasional use only, under specialist advice).

History and traditional use

Known since ancient times, long pepper was once more sought after than black pepper in Europe. In India, it remains a key ingredient in tonic, digestive, and respiratory preparations. It is used to "awaken the digestive fire" ( Agni ) and as a catalyst for other natural remedies. It is also used in ancient Tibetan and Persian remedies.
