A gentle flower for elimination

Blackthorn flowers are known to gently stimulate the kidneys and intestines. They are often used in formulas designed to purify the body, combat water retention, and relieve temporary constipation without irritation. They also have a mild natural sedative effect.

Description

Dried whole flowers, white to cream, very light, discreet and herbaceous odor, mild flavor. Hand-harvested in spring, air-dried away from direct sunlight.

Main virtues

Depurative, mild diuretic, mild laxative, moderate nervous calmative, aperitif (opens the appetite in children).

Main constituents

Flavonoids, mucilages, tannins, small amounts of essential oils, traces of cyanogenic glycosides (in negligible amounts in flowers).

Use and dosage

  • Infusion: 1 to 2 g (1 teaspoon) of flowers for 200 ml of hot water – infuse for 10 minutes – 2 to 3 times a day for a 2 to 3 week course.
  • Synergies: with blackcurrant, nettle, dandelion or birch in spring drainage treatments.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Plant well tolerated at usual doses.
  • Not recommended in cases of chronic diarrhea or severe intestinal irritation.
  • In children, limit quantities to ½ adult dose and occasional use is recommended.

History and traditional use

Blackthorn flowers were traditionally used in rural Europe to "cleanse the blood" in spring. They were included in grandmother's remedies for liver congestion, mild fevers, and irritability in children. Their use as a gentle family cleanser is still well-known in traditional herbalism today.
