Meadowsweet ( Filipendula ulmaria ), formerly known as Meadowsweet, is a common herbaceous plant of European wet meadows. Its flowering tops are recognized in herbal medicine for relieving pain related to joint disorders, helping to eliminate water and purifying the body. It is sometimes nicknamed "plant aspirin" because of its natural salicylate derivatives.

Dried and cut flowering tops (inflorescences, peduncles and upper leaves), creamy yellow to green in color, with a sweet, slightly honeyed odor and a floral, subtly bitter flavor.

Use and dosage

  • Infusion: 1 tablespoon per 250 ml of boiling water, infuse for 10 minutes. Drink 2 to 3 cups per day, preferably between meals.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Not recommended in case of allergy to salicylates (aspirin, etc.).
  • Do not use in children under 12 years of age, or in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Avoid in case of anticoagulant treatment or peptic ulcer.

History and traditional use

Valued since the Middle Ages, meadowsweet was part of traditional remedies for pain, fever, and gout. It was also a sacred plant of the Celts. It was from its salicylates that aspirin was developed in the 19th century. Its use remains common in herbal medicine for joint comfort and purification.
