What is a hydrosol? Differences with essential oils
What is a hydrosol? Differences with essential oils
A distillation product with multiple uses
Hydrosol is a floral or aromatic water obtained during the steam distillation of aromatic or medicinal plants. Unlike essential oil, which is fat-soluble, hydrosol is water-soluble , which makes it gentler to use and accessible to everyone, including children and pregnant women, subject to precautions.
Differences between hydrosols and essential oils
- Concentration: hydrosols contain a small quantity of aromatic compounds (less than 1%) while essential oils are very concentrated.
- Solubility: hydrosols are soluble in water, essential oils in fatty substances.
- Uses: the hydrosol can be used pure on the skin , in cosmetic treatments, room mists or even for food use depending on the quality.
- Softness: hydrosols are better tolerated and suitable for more frequent use.
How to use hydrosol on a daily basis?
You can use hydrosol as a facial tonic , in a refreshing mist , to soothe the skin after shaving or sun exposure, or in a homemade cosmetic preparation. Some hydrosols such as Roman chamomile or Damask rose are very popular for their softness and delicate fragrance.
Precautions and storage
Since hydrosols are naturally low in preservatives, it is important to keep them refrigerated after opening and use them within 3 months. It is best to choose 100% pure hydrosols, without preservatives or alcohol .
