A botanical treasure of the summits

Harvested between 2,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level, Alpine Genepi is one of the plants protected in the wild due to its rarity. In controlled cultivation or regulated harvesting, its flowering tops offer a resinous, slightly camphorated fragrance, unique and sought after for artisanal preparations.

Main virtues

Traditionally used as a digestive herbal tea after a heavy meal, in alcoholic macerate to make typical liqueurs, or to flavor sweet or alcoholic mountain preparations.

Main constituents

Essential oils (natural camphor, cineole, small amounts of thujone), flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones.

Use and dosage

  • Infusion: 1 g for 250 ml of simmering water, infuse for 5 minutes (occasional use).
  • Macerate: 30 to 50 g per liter of 40° alcohol for homemade liqueurs (maceration time: approximately 40 days).
  • Culinary use: flavoring of desserts (syrups, creams, sorbets) in moderate quantities.

Precautions, side effects and contraindications

  • Use in moderation due to the natural presence of thujone.
  • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and young children.
  • Do not consume large quantities daily.

History and origin

Genepi is an integral part of European mountain heritage. Since the Middle Ages, it has been celebrated for its unique aromatic qualities and its convivial use after exercise. It is also a symbol of authenticity for the inhabitants of the high Alpine valleys.
